Pre-1996 Models
Loosen and eliminate the negative battery cable in the battery using a wrench. Lay the cable aside to avoid accidental contact using the battery terminal.
Wait 15 minutes. During this time, the capacitors that power the on-board computer’s memory will discharge. This resets the computer’s memory as well as the examine engine light.
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Tighten the battery cable clamp bolt securely together with the wrench. Test-drive the vehicle to verify that the examine engine light remains off while driving.
Post-1996 Models
Attach the scan tool or code reader to the diagnostic port located under the driver’s side of the dash near the steering column. Turn the ignition key to the “Run” position.
Select the “Read” button on the scan tool or code reader and write down all the stored trouble codes for future reference. Select the “Erase” or “Clear” button to take away the stored codes and reset the check engine light
Turn the ignition key off and unplug the scan tool or code reader in the diagnostic connector. Test-drive the vehicle to verify the repair resolved the problem as well as the light does not reappear.
